Information for Parents

If you are visiting us it is very likely that your daughter might have mentioned joining a sorority. You may be wondering, "What is a sorority anyways?" or may even be concerned by the images of Greek life that you have seen or heard in the media - wild partying, hazing, and all other kinds of irresponsible behavior. However, we Sigma Omega Nu would like to begin by thanking you for the opportunity of reading our side of the story.

We believe that your daughter will greatly benefit from her association with Sigma Omega Nu Latina Interest Sorority, Inc. From her experiences as a collegian, and one day as an alumna, she will have the opportunity to grow as an individual and acquire many skills that will assist her throughout her life. Membership in Sigma Omega Nu is a lifetime experience. Once a sister, she will be entitled to all rights and privileges of full membership. Among these is the opportunity for leadership in her collegiate chapter and, as an alumna, a standing invitation to participate in Sigma Omega Nu's National Board as well as the alumni association.

Parents’ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will a sorority get in the way of my daughter’s studies?

Academics should be your daughter’s number one focus while in college. That’s why Sigma Omega Nu requires a minimum GPA in order to remain an active member. Each chapter has an elected official who is responsible for keeping track of members and their academic performance. Each chapter also has educational assistance programs such as library hours, tutoring, and professional development seminars which assist the entire chapter. Sisters who excel in their academics are also rewarded with quarterly and yearly recognition in the form of certificates, plaques, and scholarships. Since obtaining a degree is the main reason for attending college, make sure your daughter realizes that she must keep up her grades if she wants to participate in Sigma Omega Nu.

Q: How much is this going to cost me?

Your daughter will have financial responsibilities when it comes to joining Sigma Omega Nu. There is a one-time new member/initiation fee, as well as quarter/semester membership dues. These dues are different at each chapter, but remain historically low compared to most other organizations. If a sister is unable to pay dues for any reason, she can appeal to the chapter to get on a monthly payment plan, or have a portion of her dues subsidized. All dues go directly back to supporting your daughter—these pay for official materials such as binders and pamphlets, provide seed money to put on cultural events, fundraisers, and charity events, and fund our academic recognition programs.

Q: What is the time commitment?

On average, your daughter should expect to contribute three to five hours per week for meetings and mandatory activities. If your daughter has the time, she can also choose to participate in optional activities, such as holding an office, attending social events, and helping out with various projects. Advise your daughter to ask questions regarding time commitments during recruitment.

Q: What will my daughter be doing?

Sigma Omega Nu participates in many different activities. The kind of activities your daughter will participate in may include: Fundraising for charities, community service projects, meetings, planning and hosting cultural events, social mixers, guest lectures, group study sessions, food sales, intramural sports, and sisterhood/team building activities. If your daughter decides to join Sigma Omega Nu, you should stress how important it is to balance social activities and academics. If her grades start to slip, she may want to cut back on the activities in which she is involved.

Q: What about hazing?

New members all experience a period of orientation called pledgeship. During this time, your daughter will participate in weekly meetings to learn about the organization and sorority history, participate in community service projects, plan and execute a fundraiser, and attend activities designed to build friendships among new members and the initiated members. ALL SORORITY POLICIES STRICTLY FORBID HAZING!

Q: What about alcohol?

Alcohol abuse is unhealthy and inconsistent with sorority ideals. Sigma Omega Nu adheres to a strict set of guidelines regarding alcohol. Pledges are not allowed to consume alcohol so Sigma Omega Nu will never be accused of promoting alcohol abuse to its new members. Sigma Omega Nu sisters who are of age are not allowed to drink alcohol while wearing their sorority letters to keep the sorority’s image clean. In addition, Sigma Omega Nu is not allowed to purchase or provide alcohol for members or guests at social functions. Sigma Omega Nu strives to promote responsibility concerning alcohol to sisters and the surrounding community.
